Health and Safety
We intend that no one employed by us or entering our premises shall be placed at risk.
Our health and safety policy aims to meet statutory HSE requirements and pay additional attention to occupationally specific risk.
It is the responsibility of local managers to ensure that these requirements are met and to ensure that employees and sub-contractors contribute to that goal.
BUILDINGS
Ambit offices are generally leased, and it is our policy only to occupy buildings that conform to best practice as well as statutory specifications. For example, public areas should be well maintained and free of 'slip and trip' dangers. Security should be sufficient to prevent, as far as possible, unauthorised entry.
GENERAL OFFICE PROCEDURE
Although offices are generally safe environments, we follow accepted principles such as installing sufficient electrical outlets to avoid excessive trailing cables, avoiding joins in cables and avoiding multiway adaptors. Necessary cables are located safely away from foot traffic.
Units above desk height are checked for stability and safety chains fitted if necessary. Heavy objects are not stored above desk height, and individuals are required to seek assistance when lifting any heavy object.
Potential ignition sources such as photocopiers and microwave ovens are not left unattended. Liquids are not permitted near electrical equipment. Smoking is not permitted.
Minors are not admitted except under personal supervision of a responsible adult.
All fire alarms are responded to immediately unless testing of fire alarms has been previously notified by facilities managers.
All occupants are made aware of evacuation routes and emergency procedures.
Health and safety are promoted as issues of concern to all occupants, and an incident register is kept of any accidents or potential accidents, together with action taken in response. A first aid box is kept.
Paid leave and working hours satisfy national and European regulations.
OCCUPATIONALLY SPECIFIC
Most occupants spend the bulk of their time working at computers. Ergonomically sound seating and desking is provided and any complaints responded to.
Computer screens are updated regularly and set to avoid flicker or blur.
Annual eye testing is encouraged and paid for by the company. Absence for any medical reason such as dentistry or hospital appointments is regarded as legitimate use of working hours.
RISK ASSESSMENTS
Any major changes in the working environment (e.g. office move, change of layout, new equipment) should be preceded and followed by risk assessment.
WORK / LIFE BALANCE
Although we appreciate dedication to the job in hand and the willingness to work longer or unsocial hours where necessary, we recognise the importance of maintaining a proper work / life balance. As well as being ethically sound we see that this balance is vital to the individual's well-being, and the lack of this balance can lead to stress-related illness.
